Wolf Kahn (1927–2020) was a German-born American painter celebrated for his luminous landscapes that bridged the realms of realism and abstraction. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Kahn fled the Nazi regime as a child, eventually emigrating to the United States in 1940. His early years in America were shaped by both displacement and artistic awakening, as he began to explore drawing and painting as a means of understanding his new world. After serving briefly in the U.S. Navy, Kahn enrolled in the New School for Social Research, where he studied under the influential Abstract Expressionist Hans Hofmann—a mentor who would profoundly shape his artistic vision.
Kahn's early work was firmly rooted in the principles of Abstract Expressionism, but he soon began to carve his own path by reintroducing recognizable subject matter, particularly landscapes. His distinctive blend of abstraction and representation earned him a reputation as a colorist of rare sensitivity.
