Jun Kaneko’s Legacy in Contemporary Sculpture

Jun Kaneko (b. 1942, Nagoya, Japan) is a Japanese-American ceramic artist renowned for his monumental sculptures and vibrant public installations. Raised in Japan, Kaneko studied painting before discovering ceramics, a medium that would define his career. In 1963, he moved to the United States to pursue art, studying under influential ceramicists like Peter Voulkos at the University of California, Berkeley.

Kaneko’s work blends traditional Japanese techniques with contemporary innovation, characterized by large-scale ceramic forms, bold glazes, and intricate patterns. His iconic “Dango” sculptures—massive, abstract, pod-like forms—explore balance, scale, and texture, often standing over 10 feet tall. His practice also spans painting, drawing, and glasswork, reflecting a multidisciplinary approach.

Based in Omaha, Nebraska, since the 1980s, Kaneko co-founded the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, fostering artistic innovation. His public installations, such as vibrant murals and sculptures, grace cities worldwide, including Tokyo, London, and San Francisco. Kaneko’s work is held in major collections, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo.

Kaneko continues to push ceramic art’s boundaries, merging cultural heritage with modern expression, earning international acclaim for his contributions to contemporary sculpture.
