Jiang Tiefeng is one of the best-known Chinese artists in the world. Jiang’s art is immediately recognizable and entirely unique. Jiang has taken tradition Chinese imagery and given it global appeal, layering Chinese symbols drawn from ancient folklore and local customs with a modern style and abstract imagery.
Jiang Tiefeng was born in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province in China in 1938 and displayed a talent for art from a young age. In 1964, he graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In 1966, Jiang began working on a “Social Realism” propaganda project for the Chinese government in Yunnan province. The artist felt constricted by the lack of creative freedom offered in his work and dedicated his spare time to working on his own art. Along with two other artists, Jiang founded the Yunnan School. The Yunnan School artists style featured a more modern artistic approach, including abstract imagery and bold colors. Jiang’s work in particular used many Chinese symbols and recollections of local folklore and customs.
In 1982, a reporter for National Geographic came across Jiang’s work while on assignment in China and introduced his art to the United States. In 1984, he moved to the U.S. permanently. Today, Tiefeng Jiang’s art is art appreciated throughout the world and beloved my both art critics and collectors.
