Peter Max’s Roseville Profile, from the Roseville Series, combines figurative Pop Art imagery with vibrant, gestural abstraction. Set against a dark background bordered by vertically shaded passages, the composition features a simplified profile delineated by swift, calligraphic red lines. A dense arrangement of textured brushstrokes in blue, yellow, magenta, green, and white crowns the figure, suggesting an expressive floral arrangement.
Max’s vigorous application of paint emphasizes the physical, tactile qualities of the medium, creating a rhythmic relationship between the dark background, delicate facial outline, and colorful floral forms. The composition brings together recognizable imagery and spontaneous brushwork, reflecting the expressive approach associated with his later paintings.
Created circa 1998–2008, this original acrylic painting on canvas measures 30 x 15 inches and is presented in an ornate gold-toned frame measuring 43 x 28 inches. The painting is signed “Max” at the upper right. The verso bears the inventory code 226179.0000 in pencil, the registration number 263133 in marker beneath it, and the artist’s studio stamp below the numbers. The work comes from a private collection in San Antonio, Texas, and includes a Gallery Certificate of Authenticity.
About Peter Max
Peter Max (American, b. 1937) is known for his vibrant colors, cosmic imagery, and contributions to the visual culture of the 1960s. Born in Berlin, Max spent much of his childhood in Shanghai before living in Israel and Paris and eventually settling with his family in New York. His artistic development combined formal training with an interest in illustration, graphic design, and popular culture.
During the 1960s, Max achieved widespread recognition for his distinctive Cosmic Art style. Characterized by bold outlines, celestial motifs, stylized figures, and saturated colors, his imagery appeared across posters, product designs, and other forms of mass media. These works helped connect fine art with the psychedelic imagery and countercultural expression of the era.
Over the following decades, Max expanded his practice to include expressive paintings, portraits, landscapes, floral compositions, and recurring American subjects, including the Statue of Liberty. His later work often combines recognizable forms with energetic brushwork and vivid color relationships.
His paintings, prints, and other works continue to attract collectors interested in American Pop Art and the intersection of fine art, illustration, and popular culture.
