Hunt Slonem's "New Dawn" (2020) translates the artist's longstanding fascination with rabbits into a sculptural form, emphasizing the simplified contours, elongated proportions, and expressive character that distinguish his animal imagery. The rabbit's upright ears and rounded body create a strong, immediately recognizable silhouette, while the reduction of anatomical detail gives the figure a stylized quality that places it between representation and abstraction. Rather than pursuing naturalistic description, Slonem focuses on shape, surface, and the visual presence of the animal.
Executed in handblown glass, "New Dawn" demonstrates how Slonem extends the concerns of his two-dimensional practice into a medium defined by transparency, volume, and light. The sculpture's luminous blue surface is animated by subtle shifts of iridescent color, allowing pale greens, pinks, and yellows to emerge across its contours. Reflected and transmitted light further alters the appearance of the glass, creating variations in color and tonal intensity as the sculpture is viewed from different angles.
The work's compact, vertically oriented form contrasts with the elongated sweep of its ears, establishing a sense of upward movement that complements the title "New Dawn". This emphasis on silhouette and chromatic variation reflects Slonem's broader interest in transforming familiar natural subjects through repetition, stylization, and color.
Measuring 13 inches in height, 6 inches in width, and 10 inches in depth, "New Dawn" is signed by the artist and accompanied by a studio certificate of authenticity.
About Hunt Slonem
Hunt Slonem (born 1951) is an American artist known for vibrant Neo-Expressionist paintings of birds, rabbits, and butterflies. Born in Kittery, Maine, Slonem spent parts of his childhood in Hawaii and later traveled in Central America, experiences that contributed to his enduring interest in tropical wildlife and the natural world. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from Tulane University in 1973 and studied painting at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
Slonem moved to New York in 1973 and established his professional career there during the 1970s. His first solo exhibition was held in New York in 1977. His paintings combine representational imagery with gestural brushwork, saturated color, and repeated forms, creating compositions that move between recognizable subjects and abstraction. Birds, rabbits, and butterflies have remained central subjects throughout his career, with his paintings often emphasizing repetition, rhythm, texture, and color.
In addition to painting, Slonem has worked in sculpture and printmaking and has undertaken large-scale mural projects. His work has been exhibited internationally and is represented in numerous museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
