A number of influences combined to create the Art Deco style, including American Indian, Egyptian, French Art Nouveau, and natural elements. While the influence of nature is often indirect, Erte’s “Adam and Eve” uses nature as a central compositional component. The lush greenery of the tree and outfits embodies the luxurious and ornamental qualities typically associated with the Art Deco movement, while the masterful detail work, highlights its sharp, precise lines. Erte’s roots as a costume and fashion designer are apparent in his the use of negative space to frame the image as well as his skillful figurative work.

Erte’s “Adam and Eve” gouache on paper is signed by the artist, with the title, date, and Erte’s stamp on verso. The piece comes with a gallery certificate of authenticity.
