Recognized for his sports-themed artwork, contemporary artist LeRoy Neiman captured daily life and special occasions as a series of epic moments. His vividly colorful paintings and prints of athletes, musicians, and sporting events embodied palpable drama. Though mainly known as a painter and illustrator throughout his long art career, Neiman was also an accomplished sculptor.
In 1983, Neiman made the conscious decision to put down his palette and brush and return to sculpture. The LeRoy Neiman Sculpture Collection, released in 1987 and 1988, explored the basics of art, line, and form. Through precision and accuracy, he conveyed what he considered to be two prominent characteristics of successful people—defiance and vigilance. Neiman believed that success came from the awareness of one’s surroundings and being brave enough to stand up for one’s beliefs. Though prolific in his other artistic endeavors, Neiman created very few bronze sculptures over the course of his career.
Defiant is the first work created by Neiman for his 1987 sculpture collection. The bronze captures the rebellious spirit of a wild horse untamed as the wind. Neiman’s sculpture successfully captures the fierceness and pride of the animal through its launching limbs and rearing up pose. The sharply delineated musculature and the flying mane further imbue the sculpture with the movement of the free spirit. Defiant comes with a gallery certificate of authenticity and is in very good condition overall.
