Dale Chihuly initially used drawing as a way to communicate his vision to his glassblowing team. As time went on, Chihuly began to explore drawings, paintings, and prints as stand-alone works of fine art. "Sea Basket" shares many attributes with its namesake glass series, including its asymmetrical form, gestural lines, and vibrant color pallet. Set atop a background of bright aqua, the cobalt basket is detailed with hues of candy apple red and terracota.

This piece is currently not framed. The photo showing the frame is a mockup of a frame and what it would look like framed. If you would like the piece framed we can work with our local framer at our discounted price to pick out the perfect frame for your home.

Finished with original painted handwork alongside the metallic details and bright color pallet, Chihuly's attention to detail really elevates his "Sea Basket" print, giving it a bespoke quality not often seen in print series created by other artists. "Sea Basket" is from an edition of 125 and bears Chihuly's painted signature in black on the front of the painting. Additionally, the painting is hand numbered and includes a gallery certificate of authenticity from Modern Artifact.

About Dale Chihuly

Renowned as one of the preeminent contemporary glass artists globally, Dale Chihuly is celebrated for his monumental sculptures and installations that have left an indelible mark on the art world. Notably, he is the creative force behind the awe-inspiring ceiling adorning the flower garden at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and the mastermind behind the Rotunda Chandelier gracing the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Chihuly's glass creations are highly coveted collectibles among enthusiasts of decorative arts, reflecting his unmatched skill and innovation.

Despite an initial disinterest in formal education, Chihuly dedicated significant time to his academic pursuits, earning both scientific and artistic degrees in sculpture from prestigious graduate schools. While early on, he demonstrated a flair for interior design and craft, his true passion always lay in the art of glass. As a Fulbright Fellow in the late 1960s and an apprentice at the Venini Glass Factory in Venice, Chihuly honed his expertise in Murano glasswork, playing a pivotal role in bringing the ancient art of glassblowing back into the international spotlight.

Chihuly's monumental and small-scale artworks grace over 200 of the world's most esteemed decorative art collections, a testament to his enduring influence. Remarkably, the artist holds twelve honorary doctorates, underscoring the profound impact of his contributions to the art world.

His illustrious body of work spans various series, with notable ones including Cylinders and Baskets from the 1970s, Macchia, Venetians, and Persians from the 1980s, Niijima Floats and Chandeliers from the 1990s, and the more recent Fiori series from the 2000s.

For over three decades, Chihuly has served as the artistic director of his team of craftsmen, a role he assumed after two accidents left him visually impaired in one eye and unable to handle the glassblowing tube. This transformative shift opened new vistas for him to explore the possibilities of glasswork on a broader scale while retaining his distinctive and recognizable style.
