About Dale Chihuly

Born on September 20, 1941, in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly is an internationally recognized artist whose innovative work in blown glass helped transform the medium into a respected form of large-scale sculpture. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Washington, a master's in sculpture from the University of Wisconsin, and an MFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design.

A pivotal 1968 Fulbright Fellowship allowed Chihuly to train at the Venini glassworks in Murano, Italy, where he absorbed techniques he would later adapt for his own studio practice. In 1971, he co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School near Seattle, cementing his role in launching the American Studio Glass Movement.

After losing sight in one eye in a 1976 car accident, Chihuly began relying on a team of expert glassblowers to physically produce his designs, allowing him to focus on form, color, and concept at an ambitious scale. His organically inspired series—including Baskets, Seaforms, and Persians—along with dramatic public installations, have been exhibited in museums, gardens, and cities around the globe.

Chihuly's work is held in major collections worldwide, and his large-scale exhibitions have drawn record attendance at botanical gardens and museums. He remains based in Seattle, where he continues to direct new projects and expand his artistic legacy.
