About Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly (born September 20, 1941, in Tacoma, Washington) is an American glass artist widely credited with elevating blown glass from craft to large-scale fine art. He studied interior design at the University of Washington before discovering glassblowing, later earning degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Master of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in 1968.

That same year, a Fulbright Fellowship took Chihuly to the Venini glass factory in Murano, Italy, where he became the first American glassblower permitted to work alongside Venetian glass masters. Upon returning to the United States, he founded the glass program at RISD and, in 1971, co-founded the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington—now recognized as one of the world's leading centers for glass art education.

Following a car accident in 1976 that left him blind in one eye, and a later shoulder injury, Chihuly transitioned from personally blowing glass to directing skilled teams of gaffers who execute his designs. This collaborative "team approach" enabled him to create monumental installations found in museums, gardens, and public spaces worldwide.

Chihuly is best known for signature series including Macchia, Seaforms, Persians, and Chandeliers, as well as landmark exhibitions like Chihuly Over Venice (1996). He continues to live and work in Seattle, Washington.
