About Alex Katz

Alex Katz (born 1927) is an American painter renowned for his large-scale portraits and landscapes rendered in flat, simplified color fields. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Katz studied at Cooper Union before attending the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine, where exposure to plein-air painting profoundly shaped his approach to color and form. Working against the dominant currents of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s, Katz developed a distinctive figurative style characterized by bold outlines, minimal shading, and monumental scale.

Katz is best known for his portraits of family, friends, and the New York art community, most notably his wife and enduring muse, Ada. His paintings distill the human figure into clean, graphic forms, drawing comparisons to billboard advertising and commercial art while maintaining a sophisticated painterly sensibility. Beyond portraiture, Katz has produced an extensive body of landscape paintings depicting the Maine countryside near his longtime summer studio, as well as urban scenes of New York City.
