About Alex Katz:
Alex Katz (born 1927) is an American artist whose distinctive approach to painting, printmaking, and sculpture has made him a significant figure in modern and contemporary art. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Katz studied at The Cooper Union and the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture before establishing his career in New York.
Katz is recognized for his large-scale paintings of portraits, landscapes, flowers, and everyday scenes. His work is characterized by simplified forms, crisp contours, expansive areas of color, and carefully considered compositions. Drawing from both traditional painting and the visual language of advertising, film, and popular culture, Katz developed a highly recognizable style that emerged independently alongside the development of Pop Art.
Landscape has remained an important subject throughout Katz’s career, particularly his depictions of coastal Maine and the changing seasons. His landscape paintings emphasize visual perception through bold color, abbreviated forms, and atmospheric effects rather than traditional naturalistic representation. Katz has also produced extensive bodies of work in prints, drawings, painted cutouts, and sculpture.
Katz’s work has been presented in hundreds of solo and group exhibitions internationally and is held in the collections of major institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. His eight-decade career was the subject of the 2022–2023 retrospective Alex Katz: Gathering at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.
