Inspired by the ancient world of the Byzantine and early Islamic era and excited with his profound fascination with Venice, Dale Chihuly imagined a series of abstract glass sculptures. Executed under the name “Persian”, the series embodies all of the cultural, historical and experiential impulses the artist implanted into the array of fine, elegant pieces.

The first Persian sculptures emerged in 1996, as a visual presentation of the spiritual and the material component of glass blowing - technically demanding, yet visceral. As renowned art historian and critic Barbara Rose noted about the series: “Their energy expands and explodes the fundamental spherical or cylindrical shapes of blown glass into eccentric and unforeseen new forms.”

The “Radiant Persian Pair” created in 2000 belongs to this celebrated Chihuly’s series. The two conical, undulating pieces evoke the exotic mysteries of the ancient world, conjuring glimpses of images from the lost times of the Orient. This peculiar vision is often presented with more than one glass figure arranged in a group, while this specific pair incorporates silk-like character and the opulence of gold. A fusion of clear and opaque yellow glass, striped with maroon and yellow hues, lined with an opaque black rim, the Radiant Persian Pair of hand-blown pieces represent a distant world, filled with contrasts and receptive qualities.
