Pablo Picasso ceramic Profil de Jacqueline (Jacqueline’s Profile), 1956 is a simple but stunningly beautiful portrait of Jacqueline, Picasso’s second wife. With delicate ivory lines, he creates her graceful profile which pops against the dark brown background. The contrast is dramatic, and imparts much elegance onto Jacqueline that is only increased by the sweet slope of her nose, and her delicately framed hair. The lines are simple, but lovingly drawn onto the wall plaque, and the love Picasso had for Jacqueline is clear in the care with which the plaque was made.

Jacqueline was Picasso’s muse for the final 20 years of his life. The beauty and energy that he saw in her comes across the in the myriad of portrayals. During their relationship, which ended with Picasso’s death, he drew, painted, and crafted more portraits of her than of any other lovers. Picasso depicted her sometimes as an exotic odalisque and others as an Egyptian Pharaoh. Some of that divinity comes across in Profil de Jacqueline, 1956 in her sweeping eyebrow and the outline of her eye (Richard Dorment, ‘Picasso’s Saddest Love’ in The Telegraph, January 14th, 2004.

Created in 1956, this Madoura convex wall plaque of white earthenware clay, engraving accentuated with glaze, black patinated ground (ivory, brown) is stamped with the 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' and 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' pottery stamps on the underside.
