About thirty years ago, Dale Chihuly started an experiment in free-form handblown glass sculpting. Inspired by the colors, scents, and light of the Orient, the artist named the series “Persians”. Over time, the works belonging to this cycle marked one of the longest and most profound artistic explorations of exotic forms and abstraction Chihuly ever studied. Undulating, silk-like shapes describe familiar, yet unattainable experiences drawing the observer in with their spectacular, contrasting palette. They ooze a mysterious, eccentric energy evoking the slow passage of time and glimpses of old Byzantium, Persia or Venice. Art historian Tina Oldknow described “Persians” as “subtle, intense, simple, complicated, dark, light”, emphasizing their greatest value and the artist most significant mark - the brilliant, translucent, impressive color.

Alluding to the nuance of the heavens, 'Paradise Persian' explores the full potential of blue, from the completely transparent celeste to deepest cerulean. Highlighted ultramarine body and details, the piece is wrapped in lines that radiate from the knotted foundation. The unfold towards the bright yellow rim, describing the vim and defining the conceptual and visual edge of the work. The gentle exchange of light and color describes a harmonious whole, a picture of serenity and timelessness captured in glass.

About Dale Chihuly

One of the most famous contemporary glass artists in the world, Dale Chihuly is best known for his monumental sculptures and installations. He is the name behind the spectacular ceiling at the Bellagio’s flower garden in Las Vegas and the creator of the Rotunda Chandelier at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Glass works of Dale Chihuly are considered some of the most desired collectibles between the decorative arts devotees today.

Despite of his initial indifference towards education, Chihuly has spent a lot of time in school, obtaining both scientific and artistic degree in sculpture from prestigious graduate schools. He displayed a proclivity for interior design and craft early on, but his true passion was always in the glass. He was a Fulbright Fellow in the late 1960s and an apprentice at the Venini Glass Factory in Venice. Mastering the art of Murano glasswork, he continued the experiments with glassblowing and thus became one of the people who brought the ancient art of glassblowing back into spotlight on an international scale.
