Throughout Dale Chihuly's career, his constant quest for innovation has been a constant. While many of his ideas are new, we often also see him borrowing ideas from the past. Using the same color pallet as his later Chihuly Workshop 2015 Amber Plum Seaform Set, this 1989 Amber Plum Persian pre-dates that edition by more than 25 years. While the use of vibrant, unexpected color pairings and contrasting lip wraps have become a signature of Chihuly's modern era works, early examples such as this show us that the inspiration was there all along.

About Dale Chihuly

Renowned as one of the world's preeminent contemporary glass artists, Dale Chihuly is acclaimed for his monumental sculptures and installations that have left an indelible mark on the art landscape. Notably, he is the creative force behind the awe-inspiring ceiling at the Bellagio's flower garden in Las Vegas and the mastermind behind the Rotunda Chandelier at the esteemed Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Despite an initial indifference to formal education, Chihuly's educational journey led him to prestigious graduate schools, where he earned both scientific and artistic degrees in sculpture. While early interests leaned towards interior design and craft, his abiding passion was always rooted in the medium of glass. As a Fulbright Fellow in the late 1960s and an apprentice at the Venini Glass Factory in Venice, Chihuly honed his skills in Murano glasswork. His dedication to experimenting with glassblowing played a pivotal role in rekindling international interest in the ancient art form.

Dale Chihuly's monumental and small-scale artworks grace over 200 of the world's most distinguished decorative art collections, a testament to the enduring allure of his creative vision. The artist holds an impressive twelve honorary doctorates.

Among the highlights of his prolific career are the iconic Cylinders and Baskets from the 1970s, followed by the celebrated Macchia, Venetians, and Persians in the 1980s, and the innovative Niijima Floats and Chandeliers in the 1990s. A more recent addition to his repertoire is the captivating Fiori series from the 2000s.

For over three decades, Chihuly has served as the artistic director of his team of craftsmen, a role assumed following two accidents that left him blind in one eye and unable to handle the blowing tube. This transformative shift enabled him to envision the possibilities of glasswork on a broader scale, all while preserving his unmistakable artistic style.
