A number of influences combined to create the Art Deco style, including American Indian, Egyptian, French Art Nouveau, and natural elements. While the influence of nature is often indirect, Erte’s “Adam and Eve” uses nature as a central compositional component. Erte’s roots as a costume and fashion designer are apparent in his the use of negative space to frame the image as well as his skillful figurative work.
