While it is originally associated with the 1920s, Art Deco has experienced many resurgences in popularity since. The Postmodern and Pop Art movements of the 1960s shared many of the same traits as the Art Deco movement, allowing it to rise to prominence once again. The glamour and luxury often associated with the 1970s and the bold colors and graphic lines of the 1980s allowed it to maintain social relevance for decades. While the core attributes of the Art Deco style remained the same throughout, each decade had its own elements of influence. In Erte’s “Avarice,” the ornate and luxurious qualities associated with the Art Deco movement and combined with the graphic grid and saturated color pallet associated with the 1980s. This combination of influences adds complexity and depth to the piece, providing a contemporary commentary on traditional Art Deco styling. Erte’s “Avarice” serigraph on paper is signed by the artist and comes with a gallery certificate of authenticity.
