In 1980, Bob Ross began using his now iconic wet-on-wet canvas technique which he would go on to showcase on the hit TV show "The Joy of Painting". Prior to that time, he painted primarily on velvet. The velvet required a level of prevision that left little room for "Happy Accidents" and helped him hone his neo-realist technique. During the 1960s and 70s, Bob Ross would place these velvet paintings inside of gold pans, which paid homage to his home in Alaska. For the true Bob Ross enthusiast, the velvet inside gold pan paintings provide insight into his artistic evolution and are the earliest examples of his work.

The subject matter of this original painting on velvet is quintessential Bob Ross; with the snowy mountain background, rustic log cabin in the foreground, and vibrant Northern Lights. The use of dark, dense velvet adds a luxurious texture, bringing the northern lights to life against the dark background. The gold pan measures 16" x 16" and is signed "Ross" on the bottom. We guarantee the authenticity of this work and provide a gallery certificate of authenticity with purchase.
