Dale Chihuly's Marigold Basket painting is a captivating example of the artist's unique ability to translate the dynamic qualities of his glasswork into the medium of painting. Created around 2005, this original acrylic painting on paper, measuring an immense 60" x 40", radiates with the vibrant energy and bold color that have become hallmarks of Chihuly's artistic style.

At the heart of "Marigold Basket" is a striking round basket form, rendered in a rich marigold hue that instantly draws the eye. The basket's bright yellow lip wrap provides a sharp, luminous contrast, accentuating the form and adding depth to the composition. The marigold and yellow tones, warm and inviting, dominate the piece, creating a sense of both vibrancy and solidity. These colors are further emphasized by the painting's background, a cool, muted blue-grey that allows the basket to stand out in bold relief.

The basket motif is a recurring theme in Chihuly's oeuvre, often inspired by Native American woven baskets and traditional forms, but here it is reimagined in a way that is distinctly modern and abstract. The painting captures the essence of Chihuly's glass baskets, with their soft, undulating forms and vibrant color palettes, while also embracing the possibilities offered by acrylic on paper.

Chihuly's signature is prominently displayed on the bottom right of the painting, providing authentication, which is further corroborated by the Chihuly Studios registration number, an unbroken record of provenance, and a gallery certificate of authenticity from Modern Artifact.

"Marigold Basket" is more than a painting; it is a testament to Chihuly's ability to distill the fluid, expressive qualities of glass into a two-dimensional medium, creating a work that is at once bold, serene, and deeply evocative. This piece stands as a vibrant example of Chihuly's artistic vision, where color, form, and tradition converge in a harmonious and striking composition.

About Dale Chihuly

Dale Chihuly is one of the most influential contemporary glass artists in the world, recognized for his grand sculptures and captivating installations. Among his most famous works are the spectacular ceiling at the Bellagio's flower garden in Las Vegas and the Rotunda Chandelier at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. His glass creations are highly prized by collectors of decorative arts.

Although Chihuly was initially indifferent to formal education, he went on to earn both scientific and artistic degrees in sculpture from top graduate schools. He showed an early talent for interior design and craft, but glasswork was his true calling. As a Fulbright Fellow in the late 1960s, Chihuly apprenticed at the Venini Glass Factory in Venice, where he honed the art of Murano glassmaking. His pioneering glassblowing techniques helped bring this ancient art form back into the global spotlight.

Today, Chihuly's work is included in over 200 prestigious decorative art collections, and he has been awarded twelve honorary doctorates. His most renowned series include the 1970s' Cylinders and Baskets, the 1980s' Macchia, Venetians, and Persians, the 1990s' Niijima Floats and Chandeliers, and the 2000s' Fiori.

For over three decades, Chihuly has led his team of craftsmen as artistic director, a role he assumed after two accidents left him blind in one eye and unable to hold the glassblowing tube. This shift allowed him to expand his artistic vision, exploring the possibilities of glass on a monumental scale while preserving his unique style.
