This is where it all started for Dale. Pre 1980's pieces are extremely hard to come by. These are the last pieces in any Chihuly collection to ever be let go. If you study his earlier pieces you will find that not many of them contain the brighter colors Dale would later be known for. This piece contains extremely rare colors for this time period. You could argue the creation of this piece started the inspiration for some of the brighter colored pieces he would later make.
Condition: The piece is in mint condition. This is one of the rarest pieces of Chihuly glass we have ever discovered. There were not many Pilchuck basket created during the short period in the late 1970's. This is a rare opportunity to own one of the rarest forms ever created by Dale. As always all pieces are listed with the best offer option. The first to meet our bottom line will become the new owner of one his rarest and most desired series.
Given an Indian name, the Pilchuck Baskets, these forms recalled baskets Chihuly had seen in the storerooms of the Washington State Historical Society in Tacoma. He wanted to recreate in glass the feeling of these old baskets, sagging under their own weight. The colors were subdued earth tones similar to the basket models. He often placed the forms inside each other, as he had seen the originals in storage. In these pieces Chihuly asked the viewer to consider the relationship of one part to another and to the surrounding area, just as he and Carpenter had done in their larger-scale works.
