Gary Lang played a crucial role in California's rise in prominence during the post-modern period of American art. Known primarily as a modern colorist, Lang also used elements of minimalism and played a pivotal role in hard-edge movement. His work is often compared to contemporaries like Frank Stella, Josef Albers, and Ellsworth Kelly. Often employing elements of geometry and optical illusion, he is perhaps most famous for his concentric circles, vibrational lines, and color grid paintings like the one seen in "Navigator."

The contrast of dark lines with bright colors creates a sense of depth in "Navigator." Gary Lang's use of line is always intentional; at times blurring the lines while colors transition softly and at other times creating harsh boundaries of demarkation. The abrupt transitions in "Navigator" firmly define the geometric boundaries of the color grid while also contributing to the painting's overall sense of depth.

This original Gary Lang painting is signed and titled by the artist on the back and includes a gallery certificate of authenticity.
