Dan Dailey

Dan Dailey

A celebrated glass artist, Dan Dailey is best known for his architectural glass art and his blown glass sculptures with an emphasis on lighting. In a career spanning over 40 years, he has created a significant body of work exploring extraordinary concepts with a broad range of themes and styles.

In 1972, Dailey was an Artist in Residence at the Venini Glass Factory in Murano, Italy, where he worked with some of the best glass artists in the world. This has provided him with an invaluable insight and experience, influencing strongly the rest of his career.

What first set Dailey’s work apart from the mainstream was the incorporation of metal into many of the sculptures. Beginning with a drawing, each piece of his glass work is aimed at depicting human character and the world we inhabit. In this process, the artist has been inspired by a range of familiar forms, rendering them iconic.

Dan Dailey is Professor Emeritus at Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, where he founded the Glass Department in 1973. He has taught at numerous schools including Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Rhode Island School of Design, the Pilchuck Glass School and the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, and he has given lectures and workshops throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan. In 2000, he was honored with the Libensky Award, the fifth Artist Series release, by Chateau Ste. Michelle Vineyards & Winery, and in 2001 he was awarded the Masters of the Medium Award by the James Renwick Alliance.

Working actively since 1972, Dailey has been featured in more than 90 solo exhibitions and over 250 juried and invitational group shows, has completed 50 glass sculptural commissions and has been accepted into over 50 public collections.

Dan Dailey was born in Philadelphia in 1947. He now works in his New Hampshire studio with the help of a staff of assistants.
