Royo’s “Eter” is a significant work emblematic of both the artist’s signature style and the distinguished history of Spanish impressionists. The unencumbered, pastel pink background nicely sets the stage and focuses the attention on the subject matter. Passionate and romantic, Royo’s art features bold brushstrokes and saturated colors. The vexing facial expression of the figure in “Eter” adds layers of depth and complexity that leave the piece open to interpretation, elevating it from a crowded field of Mediterranean inspired impressionists. “Eter” is from the Sagitta Museum Collection. The piece is signed by the artist and comes with a gallery certificate of authenticity.

An influential twentieth century Spanish impressionist, Jose Royo (better known as simply “Royo”) is best known for his figurative, Mediterranean oil paintings.

Jose Royo was born in Valencia, Spain in 1941 and displayed an impressive talent for art an early age. He studied with private tutors beginning at the age of 9 before attending the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia at 14. In 1968, Royo began touring the country to widespread recognition. After his tour, he was commissioned to paint the royal portraits of King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.

As Royo developed as an artist, his style evolved from classical to something more impressionist. Influenced by his homeland, his art began to take on a distinctive Mediterranean quality. He began experimenting with texture, including thick brushstrokes, as well as bolder colors. His paintings have a sunlit quality that impart qualities of his homeland onto any subject matter he paints.
