Best known for his Dr. Seuss inspired sculptures, Leo Rijn fluently translates the beloved characters to three dimensional forms. Combining the worlds of commercial and fine art, Rijn creates works of art that are both masterful and whimsical.
Leo Rijn has an impressive film resume, including sculpting work on Edwards Scissorhands, Star Trek, Coraline, and Thor. He was commissioned by Universal Studios to create large scale sculptures of Dr. Seuss’ most beloved characters for their groundbreaking Suess Landing attraction. He was later selected as the inaugural sculptor of the Dr. Seuss Tribute Collection I, a collection of large-scale bronze sculptures created to honor Dr. Seuss’ legacy. Bronze sculptures from this collection are currently displayed at locations across the United States, including the Munroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, the William J. Clinton Presidential Center, and Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry. Sculpting such famous figures is extraordinarily difficult, not only because every detail of the character’s likeness is so well known; but, even more so because the art must embody the personality and nuanced mannerisms of the character. Bronze is a timeless medium favored by fine art sculptures, and the choice of bronze for this collection helped elevate the work of Leo Rijn into the world of fine art.
